Mountit talks straight to your storage, so we have no bandwidth costs to pass on and no reason to meter anything you mount. It ships as two editions from one repository — the table below is the whole difference.

Every 1.x release, forever. New major versions are an optional, discounted upgrade.

Get Standard

Day fifteen is not a wall

No card, no account

The 14-day trial is the whole product, no card and no account. When it ends the app settles into a free mode and stays there indefinitely: everything you already set up keeps mounting, read and write, at full speed. We will not hold your own files behind a purchase you decided not to make.

It runs at full speed — the same cache, read-ahead and write-back as every paid tier, in both editions. A deliberately slow free version would just teach people that Mountit is slow.

After the trial

  • Your connections keep mounting
  • Read and write, full speed
  • No time limit, no count limit
  • Adding a new connection

Any new mount — SFTP included — needs a plan. See all protocols.

How the licence works — Mountit Pro only

A lease, renewed quietly — and we will explain why.

1

You activate

The app sends your key, a device identifier derived on your Mac, a name so you can recognise the machine, and whether it is running unattended. Nothing about your storage.

2

You get a 30-day lease

A signed token the app verifies on your Mac, against a key compiled into the binary. No network is consulted to open a volume.

3

It renews from day 7

Quietly, in the background, at a randomised moment. That leaves 23 days of slack — our servers can be down for three weeks without you noticing.

Pricing questions

Why does the Standard price look different on the App Store?

Because Apple prices every storefront in its own currency, and the number here is the euro one. It also already includes VAT — Apple is the seller on the App Store and remits the tax itself, so nothing is added at checkout.

What you buy is one unlock: every file, object and cloud protocol, on every device signed into your Apple ID, for €29 once or €12 a year. The app itself is a free download, and the 14-day trial runs before either.

The in-app purchases are not live on the store yet. Until they are, treat the prices here as the decision rather than as something you can click.

What happens on day fifteen, when the trial ends?

Nothing you set up stops working. The app settles into a free mode and stays there for as long as you like: every connection you configured during the trial keeps mounting, read and write, at exactly the same speed, with no cap on how many you kept and no time limit.

What you cannot do is add a new connection — any protocol, including SFTP. That is the whole of the limit, and it is the honest trade: we will never hold your own files hostage to a purchase, and we will not hand out new mounts to someone who has decided not to buy.

Support in the free mode is the documentation and the community rather than email, which is what keeps it sustainable. There is no card, no account, and nothing is transmitted to enforce any of it — the app decides on your Mac.

What does a perpetual licence actually entitle me to?

Every release in the major version you bought — currently the 1.x series — for as long as you like. Not twelve months: the software keeps running, unmetered and un-nagged, for as long as you use it.

When the next major version ships, nothing happens to your copy. It keeps working exactly as it does today. If you want the new major version you can upgrade at around 40% off for already being a customer, and it is entirely optional.

Two honest limits, because we would rather say them here than argue about them later. First, your licence covers every release in the series as shipped, with no warranty of compatibility with macOS versions released later. Mountit plugs into File Provider and FSKit, which Apple is still actively changing, so we cannot promise that a build from today will still mount on a version of macOS that does not exist yet — subscribers get those fixes as they ship. Second, we keep shipping security patches for your major version for three years after a later major has shipped; past that, only an upgrade keeps you patched. Feature and compatibility fixes are not part of that three years — they stop at the next major regardless of edition, which is what "perpetual" is scoped to in the first place.

And a subscription?

Every release, including new major versions, for as long as you keep paying. If you expect to want each major version as it lands, the subscription is cheaper than repeatedly buying upgrades. If you would rather buy once and sit still for a few years, the perpetual licence is cheaper.

Power user is subscription-only. That tier is bought by people running a business on Mountit, who want every fix as it ships — and pricing it as a one-off would mean charging once for support we then provide for years. Personal and Advanced can be bought outright, and Enterprise can be either.

What counts as an “unattended” install?

A Mac running Mountit with nobody logged in — a Mac mini mounting storage around the clock for backups, or a build machine. The app can tell the difference locally, because launchd starts it outside a GUI session.

It has its own smaller allowance because an always-on machine is worth considerably more than a laptop that sleeps at night. Personal does not include one; Advanced includes one. It is a Mountit Pro feature — the Standard edition has no unattended mode at all.

Does the app need an internet connection to keep working?

None of this applies to the edition you can buy today. Standard's entitlement is a StoreKit purchase, verified by Apple on the device, and the app makes no licensing call of any kind — see the host list, where the row for servers we operate is empty.

The Mountit Pro edition is where a licence key needs checking, and here is the design so it can be argued with before it ships: activation will issue a signed lease valid for 30 days, which the app renews on its own from about day 7 — so our servers could be unreachable for three straight weeks before any customer noticed. Air-gapped machines will be handled by a manual offline activation on the Enterprise tier.

We would rather say why it exists than pretend it is a feature: it is what makes the device limit real. Without an expiring lease you could activate three Macs, deactivate all three, and activate three more — forever — because nothing would ever revoke the machines you had already set up.

Can I move a licence to a new Mac?

Yes, yourself, from your account or from inside the app, once accounts exist. Deactivate the old machine and the seat is free immediately — including when that Mac is already sold, wiped or broken.

There is a rate limit on how often seats can be moved, which exists only to stop one key being cycled through an unlimited number of machines. It is set well above anything normal use produces; if you hit it, tell us and we will lift it.

On the Standard edition the question does not arise: a Universal Purchase follows your Apple ID, and Apple restores it on any device you sign into.

What happens if my subscription payment fails?

Nothing sudden. Mountit keeps working through the whole retry period while your bank and the payment provider try again, and the app says plainly that there is a payment problem rather than hiding it.

If it ultimately fails you get in-app and email notice, and service stops 48 hours later. A perpetual licence is never affected by any of this, because there is no payment to fail.

What if it does not work with my storage?

Try it first — the 14-day trial is the whole app against your own server, no card and no account. If you have already bought and it turns out Mountit cannot do what you needed, we refund you. Buyers in the EU and UK also have a statutory right of withdrawal, which we do not ask you to waive.
